Khajuraho is one of the most famous tourist destinations of India. The Khajuraho is also known as the city of moon god. The Khajuraho ancient “Kharjuravahaka” is derived from the Sanskrit word. The temples of Khajuraho are considered the “high point” of Indian architectural genius in the medieval period. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. History of Khajuraho represents Indian culture and civilization. It is located at Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh, India. The Khajuraho was the cultural capital of chandela rajputas, a Hindu dynasty which ruled this part of Indian from the 10th to the 12th centuries. The temples of Khajuraho are India’s unique gift to the world. This temple city of central India is famous for its temple architecture. Of the 85 original temples, 22 temples have survived till today to constitute one of the world’s great artistic wonders. The Khajuraho temples are divided into the three groups: the western group, the eastern group and the southern group. The temples in the western group are listed by UNESCO. It contains the oldest and best known of the temples. The temples of the western and southern groups are dedicated to Hindu gods. The eastern group contains a mixture of Hindu and Jain temples. History of Khajuraho is a mirror of art, culture and learning. The western group of temples is the earliest and most important. A small area holds the three largest and most architecturally significant temples-The Lakshmana, The Vishvanatha and The Kandariva Mahadev as well as smaller temples including the Mahadeva, Devi Jagadamba and Chitragupta temples. Most of the temples are built of sandstone which is easily shaped and both exterior and interior walls are covered with sculptural figures-many of them portraying women and some of them portraying explicit sexual scenes. Khajuraho is world famous for its mithuna sculptures, images which have been described as a”loving couple”.
