Kandariya Mahadev-One of the largest temple of Western Group of Khajuraho

Situated in the heart of India’s central state of Madhya Pradesh one of the most famous tourist destinations of India is Khajuraho.The Khajuraho is also known as the city of moon god. The Khajuraho is derived from the Sanskrit word, Kharjuravahaka.The temples of the Khajuraho are considered the “high point” of Indian architectural genius in the medieval period. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kandariya Mahadev is the biggest and most decorated Hindu temple of the group which is found at Khajuraho. It is preserved from the medieval period in India.

Kandariya Mahadev was constructed by Vidyadhara in 1000 B.C.The first of temples on the general platform at the back of the western enclosure is not only the biggest, it is also creatively and architecturally the most great. There are 646 figures on the exterior of this temple and 226 figures on its interior. The main spire has a height of 31meters.It is said to depict mount meru which is the holy mountain of Lord Shiva. The main spire is surrounded by 84 miniatures. Inside the temple one can find the symbol of lord Shiva. which is made of marble.

Kandariya Mahadev is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is also a part of UNESCO world heritage site at Khajuraho.This temple takes its name from Kandara Or cave and Mahadeva, another name for Shiva. It has a linear series of access steps facing the east west directions. Kandariya Mahadev has been praised as the pinnacle Of the tradition of medieval Hindu north Indian temple building.
